POLICE COURT.

Mrs. Boap came up and declared that ' the charge was quite right, wnereon the ! man struck her in the face. The man ' I had lieen for years in the country with-1 out having previously committed any' offence. He was fined* £s and 30/ costs,! half tin , fine to go to the injured woman. I THEN THEY WOKE W. A trio of seamen, Joseph Downer (27), Jank-s MeCrossan (29), and, Thomas Stacey (40), were found nestling together, and asleep, in sacks in Winstone's woodyard at Kelson Street at two o'clock tnis morning. Brought befo..' the Court later, Downey admitted that lie hail left a Canadian, ship in' November. MeCrossan declared that he had dcparU.l from a Union Company's ship recently, and Stacey protested that ' he was no rogue and vagal>ond, but a i sailor off the a.s. Waiwera, now in port. Downey and MeCrossan vvero remanded for a week in order that their recent activities might be investigated. Stacev said he had met the. others while drinking in town, and they hail merely gone into the shed to sleep. H P admitted that at the time he was absent without leave from iiis ship. JI O was convicted of both offences, being illegally on private premises and absent without leave from his ship, and was sentenced to eight days' imprisonment, with a proviso that he be put aboard his ship when it sailed. SANCTITY OF THE POST. The unauthorised opening of a postal packet was charged against a youth, Krank Reginald Turner (17), recenUy from the country. Evidence was given that an inspector of the Australian"?™vincial Assurance Company posted a letter containing an insurance proposal and a cheque for £.'> y/, at HLkutaia, addressed to the Auckland office. Finding that the proposal was not acted on he i made inquiries, to learn that nothing of | the transaction appeared on the com- ' pany's books, and that the cheque had been cashed by a trading firm, endorsed with the name of the accused youth. When interviewed by Detective Fitzgibbon the lad said that he found the letter on the stairway leading to the A.P.A. offices and opened it. Finding a cheque jin it for £o 3/, he cashed the cheque and spent the money. Accused pleaded guilty, and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed. j
