I TAKAFUNA RACES i END OF SUMMER MEETING. j I 1 BIG TOTE RECEIPTS. ' The Takapuna Jockey Club's summer ruoerinj: was concluded at t lie North Shore j on Saturday afternoon. The weather was I dull and threatening, but cleared before i racing commenced. The attendance was' KHUBLAI KHAN AGAIN. j Racing commenced with the Moana Handicap, from which I'afemla wns the only! withdrawal. It was a good bet ting race. ' Sylvan finishing up favourite, Imt a lot of n.on.y come f«.r Treso. Impudence. Wani-; gun. Jolly Princess. IVnona, tl nd 1-oni i Bnii*. The latter set ilic pace from the! start, but was not allowed 10 get very far' away, for Waiilgmi ami Khuhlal Knnn were, always liund.v. while Sylvan was wen enough placed in Ihe early stages lo win If: good enough. Lord Bruce fulfilled the role of pueeuiUKcr right Into the straight, when 1 he was done witn and Wanlgan and Kliulilni Khan headed him. while Sylvan also came on tbe s.-enc. au interesting race resulting In favour of Khuhlal Khan by a neck from j \\anigan, with Sylvan half a length away, I third, just iv front of 1/or.l Bruce, witn j Penona. which was finishing fast, ucm. MAORI TIKANGA AT LAST. j Harlestone was the only defection from I the Takapuna Ilu.-k Hurdles, which left al id.men to contest the event. Multiplane lini.sbt'-d up favourite, aboui a hundred and | 1 lift v pounds better fancied than Shell shock, while a lot of money came for ] Mn,,ri Tlkanga. 1.a.1v Lyddite, tleneral ; itavpu, 1.a.1v Energy. Astray, Lombardy |and Guerre ii Mort. The favourite was in , trouble all the way. never getting within 'striking distance, nn.l Shell Shock. General 1 Haven. Maori Tlkanga aud Romance were Ithe ..nlv ones with cliaii.es when the last half mile was entered on, Lady Lyddite. which was well placed up to this stage, falling. Shell Slick and Maori Tlkanga came |at the last obstacle alums! on (onus, whi!" l Uencral Itaveu put in another run. aud I Romance was also handy. Maori Tikanga outstaying his opi.nii.-nts and getting the. ileeisloa l.v hair a neck fr.-'m Shell Shock. I with tlene'ral Haven wilbln half a length, and Romance .lose up. - A SHOUT HEAD VII-TOUY. ! I Queen Abbey. Lord Kcnilworth. novelet 'an.l IMuiuiiuitlon dro|ipe.i ...it of Ihe Suburban II Heap. Golden Bubble beiutt j backed down lo a short pri.-e. but ii was :n sood pool and ('rowlinrs:. Geoffrey. rino kaV.a. 1.-a.l Sweet. I.oval Mark. Miss Elllce. Infante and Ring Lupin had a lot of friends, the only one at a long price helng Soultane. I The favourite began well b.iV never really I goi a rest with his bis weight, lor Infante -kepi him at It all the way. while Dead I Sweet Crow-hurst. Tinokaha and Miss hllioe 'were handy. Infante got alongside Golden Bubble inside the distance, and though the | favourite did li's best to keep him off tintask wns just 100 much for hi-.n. Infante, I which had 411b ihe b»tter of the weights. I I beating liim by a short head, paying a two •figure dividend. Crow hurst got third, a Jleugth and a-half away, with Dead Sweet I right up. fourth. j ; LANDSLIDE A WINNER. I Tinohoro withdrawn Ju favour of Royal ' ! Abbey was the only scratching from the i Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, which I produced spirited speculation, ihe whole of I the starters having plenty or friends. ißoval Abbey was a good tirst fancy, nearly a "thousand pounds hotter fancied llian | : Uoekueld. with Landslide nearly as well . backed as the last-named, the order of the j others In the beltinc boinu Scrap o' Paper. | i Windorah, Canowindra. Gatherer. aatl I Walton, with Mangamahoe the outsider. The held was troublesome at tbe post, but I I once they settled down to the task In I front of thorn Gatherer was out making the j pace, and maintained this position until ! the straight was reached, where the veld I had bunched up. Royal Abbey sot a run , through next the rails as they came round : the home turn, and his victory was loudly proclaimed, hut all too soon, for 1-andsll.le went after him. while Onthorer was also I hanging on to his tusk. Royal Abbey was i still flattering bis supporters at the tor- . ) races, but then It. Reed brought landslide along on the outside with a well-timed run. I !and gradually wearing down Royal Abbey, K ot up to win by half a neck. Gatherer got third, two lengths away, just In front of Windorah. with Walton well up. nest. As the Held raced past the stand. Rock ; I field was knocked almost over, bumping into , | Mangamahoe. the rider of the latter being] I shot out of the saddle, while Roekfield had to be pulled up, practically taking no part In the race. Downing, the rider of Mangamahoe, col a nasty shaking. After the race the stewards held" an Inquiry into the mishap, and after hearing the evidence decided that the inter | ference was unintentional, but severely censured Wiggins, the "rider of Canowindra, ! for alleged careless riding. j THE YOUNGSTERS. j The elirht carded came out for the Hobson ' Handicap, the two-year-old event, ami a red hot favourite was made of l.cithlleid, but a , good pool was made up by the aupport no | corded Unahi, Ornnga, Namutere. ami Loyal Irish. The youngsters were a bit - restless at the post, and when the barrier lifted Oranga and Namutere moved first. ; The former led for a couple of furlongs. then Namutere took charge, being chased into the straight by Marble Crag. Oranita. Loyal Irish, and Unahl. the favourite being already beaten. Namutere maintained his advantage in tho run home, getting the verdict by a length and ahull from Marble Crag, with Loyal Irish the same distance further back. ITiahl got fourth, after getting tlv worst of the running, but the favourite never looked to have a winning chance. FROM END TO END. The only detection from the Rangitoto Hack Handicap was Khuhlal Khan, his withdrawal leaving a field of fourteen to contest the event. Sir lluon was placed al the head of Ihe quotations, a couple of hundred pounds belter fancied than N'unerrant. with Slowcoach a good third fancy, and plenty of money for Marble Slab. Formalin, and Black Mark. The race resulted lin a mild surprise, for .1. O'Shea. taking Clonmel to the front at barrier rise, allowed him to run along in front at his own pace, with the result that the son of Marble Arch never let the field near him, winning easily nt the finish by three lengths from .Miss" No—al. the favourite getting third, a lentth further hack, with Formalin. Nancrrani. iind Islngurch close up to the placed hors-es. A MIXED RECEPTION. Half a dozen came out for the Waiw.ra Hurdles. Shell Shock dropping out. J Ltiperino wns the actual favourite, with All JTalk. Oaklelgh. Tenacious. Thrace, and I Multiplane backed in that order, there being lonly about eight hundred pounds between I them. Tho race was a beautiful one lo watch, and as I hey went along the back the last time it was a struggle in which the whole of the contestants looked to have a chance. They bunched up crossing the top, and when Tenacious got a good run through next the rails, and was first into the straight, matters looked favourable for him to score. The others were soon after him. however, and in the run home it was a gi-eat battle. Multiplane getting up to win by a head from Tenacious, with Thrace a short head away, third, and 1.-iporlno. All Talk, and Oaklelgh all well up. The winner, which ran unplaced earlier in the day in the Takapuna Hurdles, when he was a good favourite, met with a mixed reception on returning to scale. The stewards reviewed the running of Multiplane as compared with his first effort, the explanation tendered be*ng considered | entirely satisfactory. j THE MEETING CONCLUDED. The Anniversary Welter concluded the I day's racing, a dozen going to the posl. the ; defect lon being Royal Abbey. lime Sound finished up-favourite, but the betting was heavy, and Eslhonia. Roekfield. Vermilion. I.ovelight. Lord Kenilworlh. and Prince Charlerol got solid support. The favourite was well placed in the early stages, and taking charge crossing the top matters looked favourable for him to see It out. Gold Kip, however, came with a very fast run over the concluding stages, getting up to win by half a length. Esthouia got third, a length away, with Tresor, Roekfield and Trinee Charleroi close up. THE TOTALISATOR. During the afternoon tbe sum of £88.317 passed through the machine, making a total for the meeting of £144,044, against £133,207 last year, an Increase of £11,.'!77.
