DANGERS TO BATHERS.
WARNING NOTICES NEEDED. BOTTLES ON BEACHES. During the summer season many residents of Auckland become almost amphibious, due to the fact that there are so many line beaches close at hand to tempt them to go in for a swim. The accident reported in Saturday's issue shows the need for boards being posted bearing notices to warn bathers where there is any particular danger from swift currents. Mr. H. 0. Hill, of Christchuroh, says that two such notices should be posted at Devonpjrt, one on the spit and the other opposite Ventnor House. An onlooker writes: "In your report of the rescue from drowning at Devonport of two girls no mention is made iof the noble action of Archdeacon Haw- : kins. While wishing in no way to detract from the bravery of Mr. Hill and | others who immediately went to the ; assistance of the bathers, 1 think it only I just to state that, on hearing the cries ; for help, the Archdeacon, without divestI ing himself of his clothes and regardi less of danger, was the first to rush in to the assistance of the drowning ones and succeeded in .bringing ashore one of the girls." Another danger to people paddling on i the beaches is that of broken bottles. A gentleman who spent Saturday at B-jck-land's Beach, states that the way bottles are carelessly thrown about and then I broken is a great danger to children at I the seaside. I
