RESCUED FROM DROWNING.

GIRLS CAUGHT BY SWIFT ' CURRENT. A PLUCKS RESCUE. An accident which, but for the plncky act of a Btrong swimmer, might ha\-"e resulted in two girls about 15 years of age being 1 drowned, happened last evening at about 7 o'clock at the wharf beach, Devonport. The occurrence was witnessed, by a large crowd, several hundreds of people being on the waterfront enjoying the cool oi the evening. The girls were heard calling for help, and were seen to be in a perilous situation, as they were being carried by the swiftrunning current towards mid-channel. Mr. H. G. Hill, a visitor to Devonport, seeing the danger of the girls, at once swam off to their assistance. One had already sunk once, but fortunately she came up to the surface again as Mr. Hill drew near. He succeeded in bringing her safely ashore, and the other girl was also rescued. Both girls were in a very exhausted condition. The services of Dr. L. K. Hagen were secured, and both the girl 3 were soon all right again. Another escape from drowning occurred at about 10 a.m., at high tide, when a small child fell from the Queen's Parade, near Bond"s wharf, into the sea. She was eventually rescued by a girl named Miss Martin (who jumped'in with all her clothing) and an employee at Bond's works. During the afternoon a girl bathing off the Windsor Reserve also got out of her depth, and had to be helped back to the shore.
