EXPORTS AND IMPORTS.
TWO YEARS' FIGURES INTERESTING COMPARISONS. The important returns for the Decefflber quarter are given in the "Gazette issued on Thursday, and the export returns were issued last week, so that the figures for 1920 are now available. The exports for the past two years compare as under: — 1910. 1920. £ £ First naif .. 29.570.348 22.824.872 Second halt . 23.770.304 23.617.0.4 . Totals .. £53,340,742 £46,441,946 There was thus a decrease in exports last year of £6,898,796. The imports show a reverse movement, for there is an increase of over 100 per cent, that is, the imports have more than doubled. The figures are as follow: — £ £ First half .. 13.870.502 24.198,674 Second half . 14.705.196 37,39..1 a* Totals . . £.10,671,698 £61,595,828 The total increase in imports was £30,924,190. If the difference between the exports and imports for each of the past two years is ta-ken, the changed conditions are forcibly illustrated: — Exports. Imports. £ £ inia 53.340.742 30,671,693 1920 46,441,946 61,595,828 In 1919 there was a very substantial excess of exports over imports of £23,031, 834. Last year the imports exceeded the exports by a large amount, £15,153,882.
