OBITUARY.

One of the respected pioneers of Auckland passed away recently at Dunedin. .Mr. James Reid came to Auckland in 1805. He was a native of Forfarshire, Scotland, and received his education at the Arbroath High School. For a time he was assistant to -dr. F. McCrae, in the Auckland Grammar School. He then went to the Thames, as manager of a quart- mining company. Later on Mr. Reid was induced by Mr. Hyslop to join the educational staff in Otago. He was teacher at Taieri Beach and at North-East Valley, Dunedin. He also held the position of assistant to Dr. Black in the chemistry class in Otago University. He was then appointed as rector of the Milton High School, and for more than a generation Rector Reid, of Milton, was one of the best known and most respected men in South Otago. As an educationist Mr. Reid did solid work, and he was one of the firet to start woodwork and agricultural chemistry classes in connection with Government schools. He was one of the highly esteemed and fast decreasing band of Xew Zealand pioneers. Although a busy man, he found time to discharge the duties of an elder in the Presbyterian Church. His influence was ever for the uplift of the community. He is mourned by three daughters and three sons.
