(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your Vesue e>f last evening it is stated tihat a question was pt;t to the Prime Minister as to whether the War 'Leg-iiftatiou' prejtecting tenants had expired. The fact is Dhat in the Statutes Repeal and Expiring ham Amenxlmont and Continuance Act, 1820, Section 8, it is expreselv stated that uhe War Legr'slation Amendment Act. IttlO, and sub-c----quent amenehnent* —which give protection to tenant.- —wh-all continue in force until .Vr-srust 91, 1921, and shall then expire unless continued. There can be no question therefore on the point—the legislation protecting tenants is in fore.-. and will continue until the e/nd of August, 1021.—1 am. etc., J. .1. SU'LUV.VN.
(To the rWitor.i | Sir, —T write to correct an crronioiwj idea that appears to have obtained | credence with many of your readers Tin- monument on One Tree Hill will be an Auckland memorial, erected by the people of Auckland to commemorate the great victory of 1918. There will innothing parochial about it. As the hill is within the One Tree Hill road dis trict. the local body was doing no more than its duty in bringing this proposal before the public. It will In- known only as the Soldiers' Monument, and will, from its lofty situation, vividly recall to tlie present and to future generations the great, victory and the glorious dead. —1 am, etc., H. (To the Editor.) Sir. — I observe your mild protest against the destruction of the ti-trce at Rotorua. Are you not afraid peoplewill be saying you are becoming a little
eccentric? Surely you must have leurnt by now that, notwithstanding its rxeiniisitc flower*, delicate fragrance, and ofU'n perfect form, ti-tre-c is not heaven's gift to drape the scars on nature and refresh the soul of the beatity-le>ver in barren places, but rather Satan's provision for that spirit af vandalism in his servants so numerously abroad in theland to-day. Here in this swamp is n splendid clump. Shall we pause to inhale its perfume, admire its symmetry, rejoice our eyes on the snowy blossoms swaying like foam on an olive sea? Oh, Lord, no! Let's put a match to it quick. The tear, the Hare, the crackle — arc they not mu=ic to the vandal's ear. Is not the blackened scar a feast to his eye- anei the smer.ilele-r and smoke of pent a sweet savour in his nostrils? In the far north there is little else- but ti-tre-c, though, but for vagrant cattle, the place could anei -would scion be clothed* in wattle- anil pine anei gum. These at least grow well and easily, and would possibly help to allay the scorching winds and enroaching .sands. Rut even -the ti-tree is never given a chance. To get at one or two thick piesees for firewood a whole clump will be brutally burnt or chopped eiown: needlessly, too, since ti-tree is not prickly. Then the destroyers will be heard complaining that firewood is beginning to get scarce. Ho-wevcr, though it is permissible for Mr. YVragge to roll his pen in a fine frenzy over the destruction of palms of slow growth, lr.it we will get ourselves laughed at if we profess T,o find beauty in ti-tree. A "common" shrub like that! If only we could persuade people it was some choice exotic! By gTavely calling it "Scarlatus runnariotis," I have had the more exclamatory type of beauty "lover" fall prostrate in devotion before mv scarlet-runner bean. —1 am, etc., BLACK WATCH.
