A MAYOR'S INDISCRETION. (By Telegraph.—Tres-s Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In March last the Mayor of Petone, Mr. McEwan, was one of a deputation to the Prime Minister on the question j of the coal shortage and distribution at . Petone. In the course of his remarks! he was reported as saying that "Dealers | _ in Petone were in the habit of delivering • 3 only 1001b as a hundredweight, and he , had some evidence that the weight was j sometimes much shorter than that." j _ Some dealers brought an action for the ! recovery of £200 damages for an alleged . defamatory statement. When the case j _ was called on at the Magistrate's Court i to-day, counsel for plaintiff asked that the case be withdrawn, as defendant c had tendered an apology and paid legal expenses. 1 ■
