EMBARGO ON POTATOES.
LIFTED TOO LATE. (By Telegraph — Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN. this day. 1 n the opinion of a leading Dunedin merchants the embargo lifting on potato export to the Commonwealth will come too late. He says: "If the Aus-j tralian representative, when he comes acros-, finds that any of our districts] are clean as regards scab, wo will probably bo allowed to ship, but that permission may not end the difficulty. There must bo delays in making the report, and, even if it Is favourable, a little time will be taken up in gittingj ready for shipment. I am afraid it will be the end of September before we can get potatoes actually on board a ship, and by that time some sprouting may have commenced. If that should happen, and it is likely, and the potatoes have to stand in a warm bold for a week or ten days, one cannot be eurc that they! will be in marketable condition wuenl they arrive. My point 16 that it is a question whether relief is not dining too. late. I hope not, but there is a d.jubt. One thing cjnito sure is that there is an ample supply to draw from in Canterbury."'
