HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
A correspondent, "Inquirer," asks for n recipe to make black boot polish. Take .lib of .beeswax, 1 lb of lard, ..b of neiitsfoot oil. 1 Ib of turpentine, Ob of ivory black, ill. of pulverised indigo, and It tablespoon-fill of glycerine. Melt the wax and the lard together, add' the oil, and stir well, allow to cool, then add the turpentine, allowing it to heat slowly once more. While still warm add the ivory and lamp blacks and the indigo, then the glycerine. The mixture should lie stored in small flat tins, and kept ail' tight. To make brown polish, take Hlb of beeswax, lib of hog's lard, loz of lieats- . foot oil, Mb of turpentine, and sufficient dragons blood to colour to fancy. (Melt • the wax and lard, then add the oil. • After it is slightly cooled mix in the ! turpentine, nnd before the mixture gets < too cool add the colouring matter, stir--0 ring it well in. Rub the polish on the i leather with a rag, polish with a brush, ? and finish with n soft rag. i A correspondent. "War Bride." asks - for a recipe for making soap. Both of these have been tried. i Ingredients.—l 4lb of clean fat, 4 gal--1 lons of water, 31b caustic soda, 21b of : resin, 4oz of borax. 1 Method. —Put all in a copper or "boiler ,' and boil slowly for 1_ hours. Watch carefully, as it will quickly Iboil over, f Stir now and then while it ia boiling. , also while cooling. Leave in the Conner , 24 hours. ' No. 2.—lngredients: 13ft> of fat, 7J ! pints of water, 21b caustic soda. Method.—When rendering the fat put about a teaspoonful of Condy's crystals •-, in the water you clarify with. 'Next 1 day melt the fat and dissolve the caustic 3 soda in the"*7* pints of water. When - caustic soda is cold and fat nearly so. , pour the caustic soda very slowly Into I the fat, stirring all the "time. " Then - pour into a wet calico lined box or into 1 a pan. Wrap round with a blanket. Cut up next day.
