THE FRUIT FLY.
An important matter was brought Upf ore the Council of the Chamber of Commerce I yesterday afternoon in a letter written by Mr. *J. D. 'Whitcombe, who stated \hat, having purchased a dozen oranges in a city shop, he found two of them affected with fruit fly. The writer added i that three weeks ago he saw in the suh- : I urbs a place where thousands of oranges j I had been dumped. He contended if that i fruit had been condemned it should have been destroyed, and not left to rot, and perhaps introduce orchard pests. Mr. Whitcombe referred to what had been done to pet rid of the fruit fly in Tonga, and suggested steps should lie taken to get oranges from-that group admitted j into New Zealand. He stated that at the present time millions of fine oranger were allowed to go to waete. If these could be shipped to Auckland it would supply cheap fruit throughout the year. The Council agreed to forward the communication to the head of the Department interested in fruit inspection.
