State assistance in the establishment of day nurseries where children could be left in charge of trained nurses, thus relieving working mothers, was asked by H deputation of ladies who interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs (lion. Mr. Anderson , , this morning. It was stated that Wellington ladies had raised jC'tOO an<l anticipated increasing the fund to CIOOO or C2OOO. The Minister replied (hat he feared this would jiot be the only request for help, there being <i general desire throughout tlii' Dominion for the establishment of day nurseries, nnil it would involve large expenditure lie. deferred giving a definite answer until be had ascertained what amount was likely to be required for the whole Dominion. In any case. he could not promise a !£ for .C subsidy: any grant forthcoming would be a lump sum.
