AFRICAN RAILWAYS.
A BIG- DEFICIT.
(Received 2 p.m.) CAPETOWN, May 24. In the House of Assembly, Sir Tbomae Watt, Minister of Public Works, stated that for the year ended March 30 the railways showed a deficit of £617,000, though increased rates since 1916 produced £6,000,000 sterling. It was in, tended to erect grain elevators at Durban, Capetown, and inland towns, capable of dealing with 1,250,000 tons.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) j '■ .
