RETURNED SOLDIERS' NEEDS.

SUSPENSION OF SETTLEMENT ACT. HOUSES AND WORK. A strong protest against the temporary suspension of the Act under which tne Government gives assistance to soldiers desirous of settling on the land was pawed at last night's meeting of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, the president (Mr. G. Elliot) in the' • chair. The, concluding part of the resolution read: "This Association being ot opinion that the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act is still in force eoldiers are entitled to Jiave their applications received and considered, test cases tie instituted, and a writ of mandamus issued against the Crown, if necessary, to force the Land Department to retract from ite present attitude." A discuseion took place on the question of bouses, and it was decided to urge the cessation of the export ot timber and the requisition of available building material for the erection of soldiers' dwellings. Consideration of a scheme for the formation of a Returned Soldiers' Construction Company was referred' to » sub-committee for- a report. The .proposal ac outlined iby the secretary (Mr K. F. Andrews) was to form a company undertaking architecture, building work, and work for maimed men, on a cooperative basis.
