DEPARTMENTAL STATEMENT.
NECESSARIES FOR INLAND TOWNS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Inquiries made of the AssistantGeneral Manager of Railways show that all main line traffic in the North Island has stopped, but an effort is being made to run a few suburban trains in Auckland and Wellington districts, morning and evening. The Department will make every effort to provide necessaries for inland towns. There has been no cessation of work on the South Island lines. Officers of the Locomotive Association confirm the statement regarding the South Island, but add, "We do not know how long we can hold our men in the South. We have directed our men who are on the Royal train, to work it to Taumarunui, wliere their shift ends. All our men are on strike at Taumarunui, and we have not been asked to take the trnin _._ "
