; The golfing season opened successfully on Saturday last ln spite of the threatening weather. Early ln the morning lt seemed hopeless, but as the day progressed the chances of a game Improved. About j 2 p.m. the rain ceased, and although the ; wind was strong those who ventured out thoroughly enjoyed themselves. At Maungaklekie quite a large number of ladles braved the e'.ements, and although the cards handed in were well down to bogey as compared with previous years, thlß is due to the cutting down of several bogeys, and the discontinuance of tbe practice of allowing a stroke nt the holes where the ladles drove off. The winner of this vase Is the player who returns the best two out of three cards, tbe other two rounds to be played later in the season.
