Colvin Memorial—Benefit 9.0. 1; Lady Lucullus, 7.8, 2. Tho only starters. Won by two lengths and a half. Time, 1.25 4-5. TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. CANTERBL'RT. (Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHCRCU, Friday. Though the acceptance money was paid for Amythas ln the tlaster Handicap, it was not long before his connections decided rbat he would not be a starter. Early on Saturday morning It was decided to scratch him, but as the CJ.C. offices are closed on Saturday afternoon, the scratching order lay in the secretary's bos until nine o'clock on Monday morning, when the scratching was announced. It will he a bit unfortunate for those people who backed Amythas on iSaturday afternoon, but they were few In nui»>>er. Thero is sure to be many arguments on the question, but the fact of the matter is that the horse Is not scratched until the scratching has been received by the secretary of the clob. In ine meantime Amythas continues to do great work in his training efforts, and will certainly have the two-vear-olds doing their best if he lfl started ln the Challenge Stakes. What a pity Gloaming Is not on band to do battle with the brilliant son of Demosthenes. Burrangong and Bore were taken to Southland by J. Miller, who rode them in their engagements. Fred Ellis picked them up when they arrived at Inverearglll. and will eventually bring them back to RiccartonBy the wav, Ellis has made a wonderful recovery from the severe shaking he received at the November meeting at Riccarton, when Mandrake fell wltb him. Though Fiery Cross showed signs of lameness after pulling up on Saturday mornintf, there is nothing'seriously wrong with him, and he Is standing up to hte work fairly well. He will race at Amberley on Saturday next, and If he comes through the ordeal all right, be will have a large following at Riccarton on Easter Monday. At the time of writing there Is crery prospect he will fare the starter in the Great Easter Handicap. Of the leeser lights Brackenfleld is reckoned to have a fair chance iv the Great Easter. The tracks at Riccarton are becoming decidedly hard, and if rain does not fail shortly, the fields next month will be considerably reduced, through the doubtful legged ones feeling the strain. Arrowsmith looks a picture. On Saturday morning, with a good weight in the saddle, he: ran four furlongs In 513-ss, and looked as though he could have gone faster. This was supposed to be three-quarter pace work. S. Trilford. who has a'blg 6tring of horses in work at South Canterbury, has no fewer than eight hurdlcis and steeplechasers under his care. He is fairly successful with the leppers. R. Derrett is breaking in a filly by Clareneeux—Judith. Like the rest of Clarenceux's stock, she le a good looking youngster. R. Longley is at present training Kolynin. which is being prespared for the West Coast meetings. Cheer Tp, by Guianoforte— Gavotte, and Kiekapoo by Camp Fire—La Milo, are two rof the horses lately purchased by West Coast sportsmen. Premium, a winner on the second day at Southland, has always shown plenty of pace. but was of sneb erratic tendencies that he could not be depended upon to reproduce lr In a race. He seems to have quietened down considerably of lttte. Onsltneht Is in'good demand for the Groat Faster Handicap, and such a solid galloper over (.even furlo-ngs is entitled to consideration. It will he remembered that, he defeated a good field when he won at Rlecarton Inst November, i S.isanof Is rrently fancied for the Great Aut.imn Handicap, but Warlike has gone out of favour a lot of late. WAIRARAPA NOTES. 'By Telegraph —Special if "Star."l MASTERTON. -thi* day. Astlnome ran .a very good race in the Flying Handicap at Masterton. |6he got Into a good position early in the race, and after a furlong had been covered, was In the lead. Lady General hae not yet struck form, ■but she Is coming along satisfactorily in her track work. Though Affectation did not impress the public in his preliminary before the Srewards' Handicap at Masterton. he never left rhe race in doubt and won as he liked hy three lengths. Penury Rose did not race up to form at the Masterton meeting, and gave a very poor display fn the •Stewards' Handicap. iSweet Memory was not troubled with her 10.4 iv the Dcash Hack at .Masterton, and won as she liked hy over three lengths. .Import ran a very fair.race at tn the D'ctsh Hack, and should do better than filling minor positions before long. [ Red Rtobou appears to be about at top form, and won the Autumn Handicap at Masterton ln a Canter. Dainty Step put up a good fight, but was not class enough for the winner. M-ultaine ran very well and pushed Dainty Step at the finish, the latter Having to be ridden out to keep Ln front of Multalne.

SCHOOLING AT ELLERSLIE. After breakfast at Ellerslie this morning, despite tut; rain, There was some schooling work. Manukau and Lady Salvadan jumped the pony hurdles without mistake. Lady Bruce jumped one of the pony hurdles, and then rive of the bigger ones without mishap. Gluetanus and General .Stephen were sent together, but the former stopped at the first obstacle, and Gluetanus went on alone over four of the bigger hurdles.
