PROTECTION OF WORKERS.
ENGAGED IN EXCAVATIONS. LEGISLATION SUGGESTED. Suggested legislation for the protection of workers engaged in excavation w-ork. etc., has been drawn up by a committeee appointed by the General Labourers' Union, and forwarded to thte Inspector of Factories with a view to liavinej it passed into law. It is suggested that all men employed on excavation, road, or railway work, or any other work of a (similar nature, including drainage, be given power to elect one of their number to confer with the employer or his representathe as to the best methejd to adopt for the safe prosecution of such work. (Failing such agreement between the workers' representative and the employer or his representative, such dispute to be referred to the Inspector of Mines for the district, whose decision shall be final. In all cases where a workers" representative is appointed suoh representative must have the endorsement of the General Labourers' Union. In the event of any face exceeding seven feet in height or a drain or other work exceeding seven feet in depth it shall be the duty of the employer or his representative or any .other person for the time being in charge of suoh work to notify the Mining Inspector of the district th-At the work is to be done in such manner, suoh person to describe the system under which such face or other work is being carried, out, the notice to be given to the inspector -at -least three days previous to the intention of the employer or has representative to carry out such work iff the manner described
