WAR'S AFTERMATH.

I Y.TOR.K FOR. THE RED CROSS. I PROVISION FOR CHRONIC CASES. ■ A special meeting of the executive of tile Auckland branch of the Red Cross Society ,was held yesterday, at which the Mayor, Mr J. H. Gunson, presided. Sir James Allen was also present to discuss with the committee a very im- , portant matter in the interests of i chronic cases of returned soldiers. For i some time past the executive of the Red ; Cross has recognised the need for providing an institution for soldiers suffer- . ing from chronic disabilities as the re ■ suit of the war. Negotiations have been in progress for the purchase of a suitable property in the city, and an important report upon the matter was submitted at yesterday's meeting. Pending completion of these negotiations it is , obvious that details are not yet to be I published, but the property in question is well situated, and considered to be eminently suited for the purpose required. The executive considers that, : seeing the urgent need there is for such an institution for men who fought for the Empire, and as a result have returned as chronic cases, its funds could ,be best expended by providing a home I where such inmates may at least have I the compensation of what special comj forts can be provided, as well as suitable .diet. It is felt that this is particularly i needed in the case of men who may ! ultimately never be other than chroma | cases. I Sir James Allen went into the details ;of the scheme submitted, and an arI rangement was arrived at which will no doubt be ratified after consultation with the Director-General of Medical Service-. [General D. J. Gavin, i Sir James, in view of his relinquish- ! ment Of the portfolio of Minister of . Defence, exiirpssed his appreciation of the good work done hy the Auckland branch of the Rod Cross during his term !of office, and the chairman in reply i thanked the Minister for his courtesy, | and the assistance he had given the I association during the war.
