PERSONAL.
Sir William Herries returns to Wellington on Monday afternoon from hie visit to Mataroata and Te Aroha. Sir Frarrcis Bell, Minister of Internal Affairs, officially re-opened Lancaster Park, Chriutchurch, at the athletic meeting to-day. Mr. J. T. M. "Hornsby, ex-MP. for Wairarapa, is to be presented with a. suitable testimonial in recognition of past services to that electorate. Drs. A. E. Park, P. E. Allison, X- G. Salmond, and !F. C. -Hutchison have taken <up their duties on the resident medical staff at Wellington Hospital. Mr. A. Hansen, the oldest member of the lighthouse staffs in New Zealand, retires shortly on superannuation after 46 years' service. Mr. J. Anein, l:ght keeper at Cape Campbell, also retires shortly on superannuation. Miss Doreen Earwick, a grand-daughter of Mr. E. C. Shepherd, J.P., of Stanley Bay, -who is just 17 years of age, and who was a pupil at the Stanley .Bay school, has passed the first section of her B.A. degree. She is at present a probationer at the Devonport public school. Mr. G. Mackay HowLtt, who for eight years has been a departmental manager in Laidlaw 'Leeds, and more recently the Fanners' Trading Company, in Hobson Street, is severing his connection with the company to go farming. Previously to entering commercial life Mr. Howitt was one of the youngest stationmasters in the Railway Department, and held the position of postmaster and station-master at Mataroa, on the Main Trunk line. A presentation of a. handsome silvermounted wallet was made, yesterday afternoon at the Northcote District; School to Mr. A. R. Merrington, who has been appointed headmaster of the Whitianga School. The cbead-mas.teT (Mr. W. •J. Wernham), and Mr. .T. Crosby (assistant) conveyed the teaching staff's regard and appreciation of Mr. Merrington, and congratulated him on his promotion.
