PRICE OF SUGAR.
FIJI OPIXIOX. (Special to "Star. ") SUVA (Fiji), March 20. There is a great deal of soreness in Fiji at the rates paid by the C.S.R. 20. for cane to white planters. So impossible has tbe position become, that most of the planters have had to get out of business, many ruined; others have had to take work under the company. At the dinner given here by the Suva Chamber of Commerce to Sir James Allen and the New Zealand Parliamentary party, the Minister gave an opening by referring to the cheap sugar Fiji gave to Xew Zealand. Hon. J. M. Hedstrom (vice-president), replied to the challenge. He stated that while at one end New Zealand was getting the cheapest sugar in the world, at the other end the Fiji planters were being sweated to produce it. It was like a big jam roll: Xew Zealand and Fiji were each getting an end. and somebody somewhere else was getting all the jam. He hoped that if there- was to be. any improvement, it would be some benefit to the producer. (Applause.)
