The consent of the Government to the raising of loans has been obtained by the undermentioned local bodies for' the slims mentioned: —Whangarei Borough Council, £10,000; Whakatane Harbour Board, £3500; Piako County Council, £2500; 'Hamilton Borough Council, £33,000; Hamilton Borough Council, £20,000; Hamilton (Borough Council, £.")000; Papakura Town Board, £2000; Whakatane Borough Council, £10.000. The immigration and emigration returns for January show that 4027 persons arrived in the Dominion, as compared with 1139 in January of last year, and the departures totalled 2065, as against 706 last year. The excess of arrivals over departures was thus 1962, against 433 in the corresponding month of last year. A total of 107 Chinese, all males, arrived last month, 45 in Wellington and ©2 in Auckland, while the departures totalled 18, 5 ifrom Wellington and 13 from Auckland. Upon the invitation of Mr. Tegetmeir, chairman of directors of the Auckland Elec&ric Tramways Company, a meeting of shareholders will be held at the Chamber of Commerce on Monday next at noon, for the purpose of conferring with regard to the course to be adopted in the future in dealing with the company's assets.
