BOXING.
UREN DEFEATS MEEKIX. (By Telegraph.—i Press Association.) DDiX'EDIX, Thursday. A boxing competition between Tommy ~ren. chp.mpion of Australia, and Dave Meekln. champion of the Orient, took place to-night. The competition was 15 threeminute rounds for a purse of £400 £230 to go to the winner and. £170 to the loser. It was held under the auspices of the Otago Boxing Association. The contest proved rather disappointing from the spectators' point of view i n the third round Meekin went down for nine seconds to a couple of short-arm jolts to the Jaw. and he was obviously dazed He went down again for eight and seven seconds respectively in the ninth round He was oown atrain for eisht and thenseven seconds, and the referee stopped the fight and gave the verdict to Uren
HEENEY V. BARTLEET. (By Telegraph.—4 Press Association.) GISBO-BNE, Thursday-. A fifteen-ronnd professional boxing contest between Tom Heeney {Gisborne) and W. Bartlett (Mnrehison) -vras fought tonight. Bartlett quitted after th e eighth round, declaring that Heenev was too strong, and he (Bartlett) wonld have no chance of success. The display was not one-sided, but was fairly tame.
