PROCESS ENGRAVING DEPARTMENT.
The modern style of making illustration blocks is a combination of photography and etching by acids. The picture is pjiotographed on to a sensitized zinc plate, afterwards placed in a dilute acid bath, which etches out the parts acted on by light, making of the zinc plate a negative, which is reversed when printed on the paper, and so becomes a positive.
