STEADY WORK KEGISTBKED. The weather was fine for training operations at Ellersfic this morning, but the bulk of the horses out were rcstrfcten" to steady pacing on the sand, tan, No. - , grass, and two-year-old tracks, all of which were open. A lew fast tasks were registered, as follows:— THE GRASS. King I-upin, with a light-weight up. ran six (furlongs in 1.17, stopping a ult at the finish. ; Rekamii and Tinokaha jumped off at the j wrong disc, running a short six furlongs, the last five of which took 1.7. Multiplane and -Great Form were together at the enil of four furlongs, run in O3s. Quin Abbey, alone, covered a similar : distance in 525. : Lucullan and Yankee .T)an sprinted four furlonga from practically a standing start in 50 2-ss, a good gallop, in which the two-year-old easily held ■Mβ opponent, and finished a couple of lengths or more in front. After breakfast King Abbey galloped 'six ' furlongs in 1.24 2-5. ; THE SAND. j Crenides ran a fast four furlougs ou the sand, covering the half-mile In 49s his stable mate -Demagogue taking 32 3-3s for a similar task. ul j

Naturally the greatest Interest centres N-_Z. Oug- . l llI ( 1 . < ( J n^^ as in any previous year. Gay Lad is a very warm favourite and local sportsmen will not hear of his defeat. His work lias been first-class, but 1 am inclined to heliefe that the last half-mile will find him out. . Kiluioon, Mascot. Vagabond, and Ivllrush have many friends, and one that is likely to cause a surprise to many fc Battle Song, who Is in great heart. C. Emerson will ride Nobleman. This horse is looking particularly well, and his connections are quite confident of leading him in n winner.

Heatbercote'.s final gallop was disappointing, but this horee will stay. At present Gay Lad, Mascot and Battle Song appear likely to run well.

Of the Stewards' Handicap candidates nothing has been going better than Onslaught, and the long straight should suit this gelding admirably. lie is sure to be running on at the finish.

Desert Gold has come into a lot of favour of late, but Bon Spec has lost many of his admirers on account of a report that he bad lost a lot of hie brilliancy.

•Mlohaela and Kilbrogan will race at the top of their form, and the former may be regarded as very dangerous. Of the lighter-weighted division, Melee and Braekeufleld will be hard to bent, but they are iardly of the same class as Onslaught, Bon Spec and Michaela.

A small field will contest the hurdle race, for which Paraoa fe top weight. This gelding has raced with success on the flat of late, and his opponents -may nnd him a little too speedy. Hylans and Sonntiio may also run well. The Welcome Stakes field will include three proved sprinters in Humbug, Moorfowl and Winter Wind, and a meeting of the three will provide a great race. The connections of Humbug are reported to be very sanguiue of beating the Chokebore Lodge youngsters in the Linwood Handicap. t<ome Kid is a galloper of reputation, but tno othere do not represent a very good
