CHESS.

A team representing the Auckland Chess Unb commenced a match at long ramte with ■tie Otago Chess Club las.t Saturday evening. A telegraph wire was installed m the local club room, connecting at the otner end with the club at Dnnedln. This is the first telegraphic match which the A-C.-C. has played for a considerable time, and much interest is being taken In the match, quite n num-ber of strangers calling at the dob room to .watah proceedings. The teams took their places at the various boards at 6.30, and after the usual preliminaries which occupied about twenty mintttee, a start was made with the match. Thanks to the excellent work of the operator, ilr. Mackenzie, who has a knowledge of the game and tool; a keen interest in the proceedings, everything went smoothly end there were no -mistakes. With the exception of a twenty miuntes Interval for refreshments, play continued steadily till 11 p.m., when the umpire and scrutineers had a busy time recording the positions on the various boards. None of the games were finished, and as many of them are very even, The outcome of the match Is stil! uncertain. Play will be resumed next Saturday evening, and it is expected that many lovers of the game will tie present at 38, Uis Majesty's Arcade, to see the finish.
