AMBULANCE DAY.
EXD OF FOOTBALL SEASON*. The close of the football season was celebrated on the Domain on Saturday with Rugby and Northern Union matches arranged for the benefit of the funds of the St. John Ambulance Association, wnosu members have regularly and freely dispensed first aid to Injured players in the various frames throughout the season, and consequently have a Just claim on players and public for the support of their organisation. Unfortunately the weather broke during the week, and the day was probably ■the worst experienced during the fieason, being dull and chilly in the early part of the ufternoon, and developing into a solid rain_ shortly after 3 p.m. The discomforting, sloppy conditions affected the attendance of both players and public, and it was only a disappointingly small crowd of spectators that turned out. The Rugby games, Referees v. Third Grade Heps., and under 20 Reps. v. Auckland, were played before the rain came on. and though the former was something of a burlesque, the other match provided some interesting football, ending In a win for the older team by nine points to three. Irving scored a try for the minors, and Prentice, White, and Bellington. scored for the reps. It had been expected that the League match l'onsonby v. City would provide the game of the afternoon, but the rain, and changes in the teams, took a good deal of interest out 01 the play. With both ground and ball greasy, the players found it impossible to give an exposition of the game up to their customary standard, and play throughout wait scrappy, though it was spiced with plenty of incident from the fact that most of the scoring came from mistakes made In haudllug and kicking the bull. Up to within the lust ten minutes of the game the scores were equal, teu all. Then City got :i try, liiid though X'ousonljy cume twice witULn an ace of scoring again they failed to put on the tinal touches, and City iinished up the winners by 18 points to 10. Tries were scored for City by Tate and S. Davidson (2), while W. Davidson kicked two goals. Kor I*onsonby tries were scored by MeClyniout and Lowrey, and MeClymout and Look each kicked a goal. The League officials failed to come up u> scratch with. n .team to oppose the Letisue referees, who won a bloodless but not a speechless victory.
