EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS.

INCREASED ALLOCATIONS (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Prime Minister states that provision is being made in the Education Amendment Bill, now in course of preparation, for a certain increase in teachers' salaries. Very much larger provision than usual for school buildings and equipment will be submitted for approval of Parliament.

Answering Mr. Seddon's suggestion that the New Zealand Education Institute's suggestions should be made the subject of legislation, this session, the Minister of Education replied that in the present necessarilyshort session of Parliament such comprehensive proposals in educational matters as the member referred to cannot secure full consideration. Legislation embodying substantial amendment in various directions from primary school .to the university will be submitted in due course for consideration.

Ml", Nash (Palmerston) raised the question of replacing old and insanitary schools, to which the Minister of Education replied that a general' scheme of remodelling, or re-erecting, older school buildings is under consideration. The proposal for education grants to be submitted later in the session will be such as will enable provision to be made ol the necessary funds. Regarding school committees' finances, the Prime Minister stated that the Government recognises that tbe cost of mci« dental expenses of school committees hag increased, and accordingly a larger vote for the purpose will be provided fhjj year.
