KEEPING THE PEACE.

LEAGUE THE LAST HOPE. REAL MOTIVE LIES DEEPER. BASIS OF MERCY AND TRUTH. (By Cable.—"Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 17. Lord Robert Cecil, in the course of a paper read on his behalf at the Brotherhood Conference, said that although the war was so horrible it was -better than condoning a crime, and until something were substituted to restrain international wrong-doing war was the only recourse, and would recur with Increasing ferocity and destructiveness. Every method of keeping peace except the League of Nations had been tried and failed. If, however, we relied on the provisions of the Covenant to preserve peace we would be living in a fool's paradise. The real motive of peace must be sought elsewhere; the only solution would be the application of the principles of Christi- | anity to international relations by following the broad bases of mercy, pity, truth i'and justice. It was not the Covenant of the League of Nations which could save humanity, but!' the spirit underlying it.— (A. andN.Z. Cable.)
