MONDAY OR TUESDAY?

A suggestion has been made, and it is well worth consideration, that next Tuesday be proclaimed a public holiday in Auckland instead of Monday, Dominion Day. The observance of Dominion Day is by no means general, and on this occasion it might well be deferred and combined with the welcome to our battlecruiser. Everyone wishes to honour the New Zealand, partly because of the doughty deeds that she performed, and the gallant record of her ship's complement, and partly because her presence affords us the first suitable opportunity of paying that grateful tribute to the silent British Navy which must be deeply implanted in every loyal heart. But if Monday is to be regarded as a public holiday, then the attendances at the public functions of welcome on Tuesday will inevitably suffer. There is no need to stress the point. All that is necessary is for the Mayor to consider whether the .change is practicable. It is a little late in the day, but we think that it is not too late.
