LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
OPENED THIS MONTH. REMUERA BALLOT TO-MORROW. The Lands Department liae notified the opening up of 17,780 acres of land for selection this month. The principal' local lands consist of the Remuera settlement, Bay of Islands, ! part of the Mangateparu settlement, near Morrinsville, part of the Maketu settlement, South Auckland, and eight sections in Hawke's Bay. Applications lor the 31 sections of the Remuera block of 3,500 acres closed on Monday, and the ballot takes place tomorrow. The terms are cash, deferred payment and special ease. There are 40 individual applicants, many of whom have applied for more than one section. The North Auckland Land Board was engaged to-day in interviewing the applicants. The thirteen sections of the Mangateparu settlement, which were opened on September loth, comprise 943" acres of dairying country, while the seven Maketu sections total CGI acres of dairying land. Two of the sections in Hawke's Bay are part of the Te Kuta block, are open to-day, while six sections of the Beattie settlement, totalling 2,G72 acres, were also opened to-day. Both of these blocks are grazing country.
