DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. EVERY ASSISTANCE PROMISED. (Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON', this day. A deputation representing To Kuiti, Taumurunui, and Otorohanga waited on jthe Premier, the Hon. W. 11. Herries, 'and the lion Pomare this morning to ; urge tlio passing of legislation to remedy r the existing disadvantages under which [leasehold tenants in the King Country townships labour. Mr. Jennings introduced the deputation, Mr. Young also being present. The speakers were Messrs. Finlay (Mayor of Te Kuiti), Steadman (Mayor of Taumarunui), F. Phillips 1 (.Mayor of Otorohanga). Mr. Jennings outlined the history of the movement to obtain for tenants of Maori township lands the fee simple, and explained that, though the bill of 1910 considerably improved their position, in regard to the conversion of leasehold i lands in tlie King Country townships, it ' whs now a matter of acute need for their progress and prosperity. He pointed out the scheme suggested was based on the principle of absolute justice to the native owners. Mr. Finla'y outlined a scheme under I which the Crown would purchase native interests at the present Government valuation and sell to tenants, plus all costs incurred, including interest on money invested, which members of the deputation estimated would not exceed £200,000 for all three townships. Mr. Young expressed the opinion that native interests were thoroughly safeguarded in the scheme. Mr. Maesey said the majjter was important to the whole Dominion. The scheme submitted appeared to him as being fair and just, and he expressed the. hope that something would be done during tlie present session to settle the difficulty. Ho pave an assurance that the Government would do everything possible to give effect to the deputation's request. Mr. llerrics expressed the opinion that the Act of 1913 gave ample power to buy any of the townships concerned if the natives were willing to sell. He was quite prepared to call a meeting of assembled owners, and try to reach an agreement. The Crown must, however, be protected after purchasing the land in the shape of some obligation on the present tenants to acquire tlie freehold. If the tenants gave this guarantee then he would go ahead and buy. The deputation submitted the draft of a bill providing the necessary guarantees. The deputation subsequently -waited on Sir Joseph Ward and members of the Liberal party, and on Mr. Holland and members of the Labour group to ask their assistance in putting through the necessary legislation.
