THE SIBERIAN DEBACLE. HARASSING THE REAR. LITTLE HOPE OF ESCAPE. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 16. The "Times" Tomsk correspondent reports that though out-generalled and out-man<Euvred, sections of the BolsheVik army continue obstinate resistance. The toll of prisoners, guns, and material, is rapidly growing. The Cossacks are harassing the enemy's rear in the Tobol and lehim Valleys, and the regular cavalry are inflicting unexpected blows. The latest coup de main resulted in the capture of-the whole staff of a brigade of the finest Bolshevik division. It is believed that the "Reds" have little hope of escape beyond the Urals. General Dieterich's prestige is enormously enhanced.— ("Times.") WHITE SEA SUCCESSES. PROGRESS SOUTH OF MOSCOW. LONDON, September 10. A War Office communique states:—We repulsed determined attacks on the Dwina front, in North Russia, inflicting heavy loss, and occujried Onega without opposition.
The communique also states that the Russians are successfully continuing their offensive agr.inst the Bolsheviks along the railway front in South-east Russia. General Mamontov during August broke through the Bolshevik lines nv.<\ continues to make raids on a large scale around Tamlov, 300 miles south-east of Moscow. Aviators report that the Bolsheviks are suffering from r. serious shortage of ammunition. General Mamontov had an excellent reception everywhere. He released 80.000 untrained Bolshevik recruits, who are returning to their homes, and raised two additional infantry divisions. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.) " ALL BUNK." WASHINGTON, September 10. Giving evidence before the Military Committee of the House of Representatives, Mr. X. D. Baker (Sceretnry for War) paid American troops were maintained in Siberia for the sole purpose of guarding the railroad. Mr. Fuller interjected: "Th.it is all bunk. Why does not the secretary give the real reasnns. instead of romancing?" Mr. Bf.ker Teplicd that it was not bis fault,—(A. and X.Z. Cable.) POWERS NOT INTERVENING. RUSSIANS TO FIGHT IT OUT. PARIS, September IC. A full council of the Peaeo Conference, including Marshal T'ocK and representatives of Italy, reached a unanimous decision on the Russian question. The Oreat Powers intend to allow the Russian revolutionaries to work out their own salvation.—•("Times.'')
