WANTED MORE PUBLICITY.

DAMAGES AWARDED. ' As a sequel to a case that had been heard in the Police Court, two women came before Mr. J. TV. Poynton, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. Alice Maud Estall (Mr. J. J. Sullivan) brought an action to recover £50 damages from Catherine Royle (Mr. Allan Moody) for alleged slander. The words complained of were reflections upon plaintiff's moral character. Evidence in support of the claim was given "oy plaintiff, a lady friend, and a constable who heard the words complained of. Plaintiff admitted that had publicity been given to the apology tendered in the Lower Court she ■would not have taken further proceedings. Mr, Moody said the case was one which should not be encouraged by the Court. The whole matter had teen threshed out before Mr. Wilson in the Police Court. On his advice Mrs. Royle had apologised, and Mr. Sullivan was paid £4 4/ costs. Mrs. Koy]e through him now still said she was sorry for having used the language and for what had taken place. It cost her several pounds in the Police Court. Mr. Moody said he would leave the case in tho hands of the Court without calling defendant. Mr. Poynton said plaintiff was quite justified in bringing the case. The apology ought to have been published in the daily papers when a woman's character had been attacked.
