WAS IN FRANCE. CONSUMERS' EFFECTIVE METHODS. PARIS, August 11. The war against profiteering in France i continues. Leagues of consumers are actively controlling prices. In each district representatives of the leagues visit the market shops and compare prices with those in the central markets. They warn the shopkeepers, if they are overcharging, that unless they reduce prices they will be reported to the police. The prices of food, in consequence, sometimes fall 40 per cent. Demobilised soldiers are also starting a co-operative buying association for food, clothing, and household requirements.— (A. and X.Z.) FOOD RIOTS IN GERMANY. TROOPS MACHINE-GUNNED. EIGHTY KILLED IN CHEMNITZ. BERLIN, August 11. During food riots at Chemnitz, in Saxony, 80 soldiers and 10 civilians were killed. At the District Court, Elizabeth *McCormiek, of Auckland, claimed £500 compensation from the .loan Craig Steamship Co. for the death of her husband, a seaman, whom she alleged died from injuries received aboard the shin Joan Craig in the execution of his duty. The death is announced of Ruggiero Leoncavallo, the famous Italian operatic composer. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.) I Uuggiero Leoncavallo, the noted Italian musical composer, was born at (Naples in ISSB. He made hia reputa--11 ion by the one-act opera, "I Paglincci" (1892). He has since composed "1 Medici," ''Chatterton," "La Boheme," and "User Roland Yon Berlin,"
