UNPROFITABLE VENTURE.
STATE DOCKYARD IN SYDNEY. EXCESSIVE COST OF WORK. (Received 8.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The report of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into the working of j the tJovernment dockyard at Walsh i Island is strongly condemnatory. It i states that capital was expended unpro- j Stably in equipping the establishment. The cost of work compared with that > done elsewhere was excessive. Neither the estimates of cost of work nor the ', chargts provided for depreciation or interest on capital. Since its inception the esta-Eshmcnt had been a distinctly unproductive- venture. The report recommends reduction to suitable dimensions to meet service needs by selling the establishment as a whole, and erecting -mailer works, or by the Bale of :• portion of the works. — (A. and _%__.
