GRANTING OF COMMISSIONS.

NEW KEGULATIONS ISSUED. A statement has been issued by the Defence Department setting out the principles under which commissions will now be granted by the Department, to fill vacancies in the New Zealand Staff Corps and the Royal Xew Zealand Artillery caused by the deaths of officers at the war and the retirement of others through injuries and age. The statement is as follows:— The rank to which an officer may be first appointed will be based on his previous service on tie following scale:—fa) Appointment to the rank of lieutenant after two years' qualifying service; (b) appointment to the rank of captain after seven years' qualifying service: (c) appointment to the rank of major after 15 years' qnalifvlnc eervlce: (d) appointment above the rank of major will he by selection. Previous service will be computed as follows:—(a) As full time: All commissioned service in the N'.Z.E.F.. or other commissioned active service. In the case of officers specially selected by the Board of Selection it may foe recommended that their commissioned service be computed at more than full time (b) As half-time: Service on the temporary staff of the New Zealand Military Forces service 5n the N.Z.P.S., warrant or noncommissioned service in the RJS.Z.\. or ■X.Z.E.F., or other active or regular service above the rank of corporal, (c) As onequarter time: (1) Commissioned service in the New Zealand Volunteer or Territorial Forces: (2) service in the ranks of a unit of the N'.Z.E.F. (d) As one-eighth time: Service In the ranks of Volunteer or Territorial (Forces of Xew Zealand, (c) Commissioned service In the junior cadets doe 3 not count; service In the ranks of senior, junior, or defence cadets does not count.

Before selection officers will be required to attend a qualifying course of not less than three months In camp, at the termination of which preliminary probationary period they will be required to undergo a qualifying examination. Officers on first ! appointment will be attached for duty on ! probation for a further nine months. If re--1 ported npon as suitable for commissions In the N.Z.-S.C. or E.N.Z.A. they will be confirmed In their appointments. Before ! appointment officers must tie medically examined «nd passed fit for active service 'In the field.

The officer commanding tire Auckland district will be able to Interview applicants on and after Monday next. All applications must be made by September 1.
