Sergeant Hodgson has taken charge of the Onehunga Police Station. Dr. and Mrs. Marshall, of Suva, are staging at the Star Hotel. Messrs. H. H. Howden and H. A Wliitaker are about to visit Canada and the United States. The Rev. G. J. Locker of Geraldine, 'Minister-elect of St. Luke"s Presbyterian Church, Remuera, is expected to reach Auckland about August 29.. Mr. J. J. Batchelor, lately senior N.CJ.U. in charge of the Officers' Mess and Club at Featherston Camp, has been appointed manager of the Christchurch Club. Mr. and Mrs. Preston Chambers, with their two sons, left for Sydney by the Niagara to-day. They expect to be absent about three months. Mr R. H. Insull has been appointed secretary to the Dilworth Trust Board. Formerly Mr. Insull was on the staff of the City Treasury Department. Major J. A. Wallingford is at the Central Hotel, having been transferred from Wellington Headquarters to the district Defence Staff, Auckland. Mr. Ewen Alison, junr.. was a paseenger on the Niagara for Sydney yesterday. He went on" a business trip of three to four ■weeks. Mr. Trentham Charles Webster, who recently returned from active service ■with H.M. Navy, was to-day admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court, upon the motion of Mr. W. P. Endean. Major W. li. Robinaon, who recently took over the duties of Assistant-Quartermaster-General for Wellington Dietrict, has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Oolonel." Mr. Howard L. Dolamore has been appointed general manager of the N.Z. Paper Mills, with headquarters at Dunedin. For over ten years Mr. Dolamore hae been manager and secretary of the Gore Publishing Co. Mr. B. Malone, late of the literary staff of the "Hawke's Bay Herald," has been appointed secretary of the Hastings Committee of the Repatriation Department. Captain Stell Gleeson, an American officer who served with the British Array from 1914 until the arrival of the United States forces in France, when the joined the Flying Corps of his own country, is touring New Zealand, being at present in the South. Mr. Frederick Redwood, second son of the late Mr. Henry Redwood, the "Father of the New Zealand Turf" and a nephew of Archbishop Redwood, dieu at Blenheim yesterday. The deceased was a prominent settler of Marlborough for many years. Mr. G- J. Meadows, who has been connected with the "Christchurch Press" for forty-five years, was farewelled upon his retirement by a gathering of 160 employees, and was presented by his comrades with a purse of sovereigns. Mr. Selig, manager, in making the presentation, stated that the directors had also decided to specially recognise Mr. Meadows' long and faithful service. At the council meeting of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce held last night, Mr. John Henderson (chairman) extended a hearty welcome to Mr. \V. K. Howitt, w,ho had lately joined the chamber as the representative of the Stanley Hay Ratepayers' Association. Mr. Henderson said'that their new member had a splendid record of public work behind him, and his wide experience would be much valued at their meetings. He also incidentally mentioned that the ex-Mayor and the ex-Deputy Mayor of Devonport were now members of the chamber. Mr. Howitt thanked the chairman for the kindly remarks he had made. He had always found Mr. Henderson a fair and reasonable chairman, and was glad to sop him back into harness again. He was far too active and alert a man to be allowed to sit at his own fireside every night of the week, and a man with hi 3 wide experience should give ; the benefit of it to the gublic.
