The first returning draft of fit men from Egypt arrived by the TJlimaroa this morning, to the number of 1,000. The Government is awaiting the Imperial Government's _e_i_ion before de:_ring a date for the official closing ot ! the war. To-day is the anniversary of the great allied offensive in France which ended. with the armistice and th. German surrender. t Last month the Repatriation Depart- : ment granted £26,634 in financial aasisi tance to returned soldiers in the Auck--1 land district. j The Government Bias "bought the Orongo Estate of about 2,000 acres at Kopu, Thames, for settlement by. returned soldiers. Pour years ago to-day the New Zealanders, after a desperate struggle last-- , ing three days captured the Chunuk Bair ridge at Gallipoli. ..^. There aTe now over 60,000 returned soldiers on the Repatriation Department's register, of whom 3343.7 have returned since the beginning of the year.
