THE TRAMWAYS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l would like to ask the City Council what they are doing to improve the tramway service. We have heard of a few extra cars on the Mount Eden line, but that is only a drop in a bucket. The first thing to 'be done is to obtain a reliable return, showing the loading of the cars at all hours af the day, and data as -to the number of would-be passengere who fail to get on the cars. The next step should 'be to provide accommodation sufficient for the traffic. What Is the trouble? Cannot care or trailers be made in New Zealand? Is it a question of cost? I venture to say that the people of Auckland would prefer an increase in fares to being left in the street. But there is no evidence to chow that fares would have to foe raised. The fares that are lost through would-be passengers being forced to walk should be sufficient to pay for the extra accommodation. An elected board should be in charge. Experience shows that the best business ability will be available, and if the 'board should fail to overcome present difficulties the people will have their remedy. Individuals of the "non possimus" kind are not wanted; few things are impossible to those who want to do them. The public have a right to know what the council is doing in the matter of extra accommodation. If they cannot solve that problem within a reasonable 'time they ought to walk out and give others a chance to show them how.—l am, etc., MAXUKAU ROAD.
