OBITUARY.
MRS. S. HARDLEY, SEA*. t ■ f Another of New Zealand's pioneers, t Mrs. Sγ Hardley, sen., passed away yes- < terday at her son's residence, Ring Ter- c race, Tonsonby, aged 82. Mrs. Hardley t was a colonist of 56 yeara' standing, i having arrived at Port Chalmers in ISG3 1 by the sailing ship Star of Tasmania I with her husband and three children. She ' passed through the stirring times of the c gold rushes on the Dunetan and Manure- i hika, in Otago, and on the discovery of I gold on the West Coast of the South Island she accompanied her husband there. She passed through all the vicissitudes incidental to those strenuous times to Hokitika, Stafford Town, Okarito, Brighton. Charleston, and Kumara, roughing it. living in calico tents, tramping through bush tracks alongside her children, who were transported in gin cases strapped on each side of a packhorse. In later years she has resided in ' Ashburton and Hamilton. Through the j courage, determination, and force of j character shown by individuals of Mrs. -, Hardley's stamp this Dominion has been j built up. The deceased lady leaves five , sons. Messrs. J. W.. Samuel, George, ! Walter, and C. E. Hardley, of the firm of £ Hardleys', Ltd.; three daughters, Mes- , dames M. A. Davis, R. E. Dowle, and J. { R. Fow, besides three great-granS- j children and 35 grandchildren. Mr. S. ,j Hardley predeceased Mrs. Hardley two ~ years ago.
