Symonds Street Welcomes Peace. THE "Upper Symonds Street Progressive Business 'Association" f ee ] s that this tremendously important' event, fraught, as Mr. Lloyd George says, "with such great possibilities/"" justifies us in making a fewappropriate remarks. We unitedly express our devout thanks that this terrible war, with the great sufferings and anxieties which it entailed, has now passed away, and, along with the many thousands "who of that great anodyne drank," it will, in time, "become a memory and a name." It is in the nature of things that it should be so. There can be no standing still—we go "ever on, experiencing, learning, forgetting" —we have new lessons to learn, new problems to face, which will demand closest application and undivided attention. We are advised to "rejoice like men who are under no delusions that our troubles are past," but to believe "that the spirit which enabled us to overcome will also enable us cheerfully to face the future," and that "in order to reap the fruits of victory each must give such strength, goodwill, and co-operation as he can." There are very many lessons that this war has taught—ethical, physical, as well as commercial—and one of the most useful of these is the importance of co-operation. We have learned it nationally, and though it is perhaps too much to expect that the League of Nations will bring about a realisation of Tennyson's dream of "the war-drums throbbing no longer, and the battle-flags remaining, furled, in the Parliament of men, the federation of the world," still it must tend to prevent war. Co-operation is also rapidly taking place throughout the whole gamut of commerce, with a view to eliminating wastes and enabling more efficient service to be rendered. Therefore Symonds Street is the natural shopping centre as regards transit, and we claim that the remark in the heading of this page is true, viz., that "your money buys most and quality is sure." Besides this, a brass band has been engaged to play round about the top of Symonds Street on Friday (to-morrow) evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring the children in—don't let them miss any part of the peace demonstrations. Finally, we unitedly desire to express our sincere hope that the present occasion may be considered to be a parting of the ways —leaving behind the old order, with all its glories as well as its errors.
