TO-MORROW'S APPEAL.

We commend to the generosity of our 'readers in town and country the appeal that is to be made to the public to-mor-row by all the organisations working 'among the poor of this city. The prosperity that New Zealand has enjoyed, for !so long has not eliminated distress. There 'are men, women and children for whom life is a struggle, who even if they have the bare necessaries of life, have none or few of its ordinary comforts. It needs little imagination to picture what life must be like in the middle of winter .when money is lacking to buy sufficient food and clothing. There must be a good many people who, while at ordinary times they were able to live in some sort of comfort, are now hard hit by the greatly increased cost of everything. There is so niuch comfort and luxury in the rest of the community that the wants of all these unfortunates —the widows and orphans, the sick, the old people who find it hard te make ends now that the sovereign has shrunk so much, and families of men out of I work or working on broken time —can [easily be met if the need is understood. |In spite of the high cost of living one j can see on all sides signs that large numjbers of people have plenty of spare money. It is these people to whom the : philanthropic bodies of all denominations are appealing for both money and clothesIt is appropriate that such an appeal should be made in Peace Week. If the heart is not moved to generosity at such ;a time, when will it be? We celebrate this week victory over our external foes, but we still have our internal obligations, j and in the warmth of our thankfulness for deliverance from evil our attitude towards those obligations should be more [than ordinarily sympathetic.
