OBJECT OF THE VOYAGE.
COMMERCIAL USE OF AIRSHIPS NEW YORK, July 11. The Mineola correspondent of the York "Times' , states that American naval officers gave a luncheon to the officers of X.34. General !Xlaitland, ob. server of R34, in a speech, said: "Wβ started to cross the Atlantic, but hardly saw it. We hugged the clouds all the •way across. I was surprised at thq dirigible's lack of motion. The Air "Mm. istry had a definite object in sending the R34 to fly from the east to the west and back. It was to demonstrate what airship will be best fitted for commercial service all round the world. The R34 is not large enough for such service." Captain- Scott said, .that Admiral Beatty had been quoted as saying that the airship in future would take tho place of the cruiser. R34 had the wind against it nearly all the way. It spoke well for the future that they could cross against such odds. The arrangements for landing here were wonderful.— (Aand N.Z. Cable.)
