EXTENDING THE STRIKE
MINERS AND TRANSPORTERS. ASKED TO MAKE COMMON CAUSE. A FEDERAL FIGHT. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. The Trades Hall Council carried a motion that the council was of opinion after the attitude of the employers at the conference, that a sectional* strike would prove disastrous to the seamen, and the only possible way of winning was by making a Federal fight. The coal miners, engine drivers, firemen, transport workers, and seamen will be asked to make common cause, and emissaries will-be sent to other States with a view to summoning a conference to decide on a policy. Mr \V. A. Wntt, Acting Federal Premier, has granted leave to the Arbitration Court to proescute the Seamen's Inion and secretary in connection with the strike. To-morrow all factories not providing their own power will rraso operations as a result of the restrictions. The Trades Hall Council passed a resolution that the time had arrived when organised Labour in Victoria should repudiate the system of settling disputes by arbitration and institute a more scientific method of gaining its ends. The unions were requested to ballot on the question.—(A. and N.Z.)
