TROTTING CONFERENCE.
•THE COMING SPORT." A MINISTER'S OPINION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Internal Affaire, speak* ing at the Trotting Conference to-day, said trotting permits last year totalled 59, and other racing permits 222. He •was convinced that wherever trotting ,wae properly conducted it was the 09ming sport, but there was no possibility, except with the sanction of Parliament, of the number of trotting days being Therefore he advised bringing pressure to bear 011 the new Parliament. Referring to the proposal to hold combined trotting meetings in connection with the visits of Lord Jellicoe and the Prince of Wales, he said this would be extremely difficult, and probably illegal, unless some clubs wero prepared to relinquish a day, and it might be there would have to be abolition of the limit, or that some latitude should be given to !.the Minister in special cases. , The conference discussed at length a jremit by Mr. Selig, "That in all handicap events the handicapper shall make a distance allowance and not a time allow--ance." Eventually consideration was deferred for a year. The conference passed a motion advocating the reintroduction of the double totalisator. The speech delivered by the chairman lof the conference is reported on anotner l'age.
