The City Council has decided for tha present not to grant free use of tha .trams to local bodies' labourers- and police on duty. The pay of doctors retained on military service is to be increased, as they are hindered by retention from re-establish* ing their practices. A deliberate attempt to derail a traia near Manutahi was frustrated by the timely discovery of numerous obstructions on the track. The City Council has decided to take a poll in the Grey Lynn area for a loan of £90,000, £85,000 to be spent on street improvements, and £5,000 on drainage. The City Council passed a resolution last night asking for an inquiry by a competent tribunal into the conditions disclosed at the Featherston Military Hospital. The inquiry into the grounding of the W-estmoreland at the Bluff resulted in a finding to the effect that the mishap was due to the quartermaster misunderstanding an order from the pilot.
