THE PEACE MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—The Auckland City Council pro . po,ses to spend £100,000 on a museum and ,1 war memorial. Surely this is a jrreat ~ mistake at a time when the country 1 .should be straining every effort to pay ! for the recent terrible war. Would it I not be far better to spend the money on . an institution for disabled soldiers aid i their needy dependents? We would thue jbe founding an institution that would I have our whole hearts' support instead I of a worthless monument, this being on'v outside show. The war and all ite !iorrors should ibe forgotten as soon a>s \ioaeible. We do not need monuments to remind us of the awful four years the world has passed through. It wouid b;; I a source of many a. heartache to the i poor mothers and relative* of soldiers j who hare, died across the seas. Would I they not feel far happier to know that lan institution existed for the benefit o£ I soldiers who wished to learn a trade and j relatives in poor circumstances? Ti.t i economic problem is becoming fo acute ! that it behoves us to go steadily, .;nd , not talk about spending hu<re eums un I luinecessary projects. v≤ be ''bigminded," and help our fellow-creatures ; during tins time of stress.—l am, etc., ■H. M. VIXI'KNT.
