TE AROHA.
The Hon. W. H. Herries ls to visit To Aroha this week. While In the district he will formally open the Omahlne bridge on the Matamata-Tauranga road. A vanity fair bazas_ ', held in connection. with the Methodist Church, was decidedly successful. The sum of £25 was cleared after payment of expenses. Mr. J. E. Thomas presided at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. Five new members were elected- A letter was read from the Northern Steamship Co., pointing out that the Ngar_r_hi cut In the Walhou Klver made by the Public Works Department was detrimentally affecting the waterway for commercial purposes. The first cut was 80 feet wide, with -which, there was no trouble. Portion had then been increased to 120 feet, and now there is not sufficient water for navigation. If the cut was made the proposed width of 160 feet the position would be worse, and the river wonld not be of 'any practical use
for commercial purposes. Silting had already reduced the depth of water In the Is'gararahi cut from 9 feet to 3 feet. After considerable discussion the Chamber's representative on the Drainage Reference Board was instructed to urge the desirability of extending the proposed River Board district to include Te Aroha borough. The president and vice-president were authorised to telegraph to the Ministers of Marine and Public Works and the members for Tauranga and Ohinemnri again urging the necessity of keeping Waitoa River open for cargo traffic up to Te Aroha. The Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts intimated that he would visit Te Aroha shortly, when he would go into the question ot the suggested playground for children in the Hot Springs Domain. Members of the Thames Valley Agricultural and Pastoral Association met on Saturday to consider the advisability ot holding another show. Mr. J. Clothier oo cupied the chair, and stated the Association had assets worth £700 to £800, on which there is a debt of £100. Fourteen new members were elected. The treasurer, Mr. W. A. Clark, submitted a statement showing the overdraft at the bank as £115 0/6. On the proposition of Mr. F. Walters, seconded by Mr. A. Hazelton, it was decided to liold a show next autumn. The election of officers resulted as follows-— Patrons, Hon. W. H. Herries, H. Poland, E. L. Somers, H. Jackson, J. B. Thomas, and T. Stanley; president, Mr. J. Clotbieac vice-presidents, Messrs. F. L. Kenrick and G. Dransfield; stock executive committees for the whole district were elected. It was decided to increase the annual subscription to £l.
