Major E. Vine, inquiry officer at Base ' Records, who is one of the most familiar figures in connection with that braneli f. of the Defence Department, has received notice of retirement, to take effect about the middle of August. Major Vine is an old territorial ollicer, a journalist by profession, who volunteered for active service at the commencement of the war, and entered camp, but failed on i several occasions to induce the authori- l ties to permit him to take sen-ice overseas. He was appointed officer in j charge of Expeditionary Force records, £ and has been associated with Base Re- C cords throughout the war. ( Mr. C. A. Mathieson, chief clerk at t Base Records, who is returning to the * Postal Department, and will shortly become chief clerk at Auckland, was presented on Saturday morning with a silver tea and coffee service on a silver tray and a silver mounted decanter, as a token of esteem from Base j Records staff. The presentation was > made by Major Roach, Director of Base Records, who stated that Mr. Mathieson's services to the branch were highly valued, for he had gone through the most strenuous times when Base Records was being organised. Three cheers were given for 11 r Mathieson, when he replied thanking the staff for their handsome gifts. He mentioned that he had seen the bnmc-lijrruw from a staff of ten r to its present total of oli. There were X 120.000 files at Base Records, 19,000 of " which circulated through the record a room daily, while the inward and out- ° ward letters exceeded two thousand a day. He asked for the same loyal ser- j,. vice to be given to his successor, Mr. C. | r T. Andrew, as had been extended to • himself. *
